Corrections
Scores are built from public news by fixed rules, so they can be wrong. When one is, we fix the rule that caused it, never the number for one country. Every fix is listed here.
Report a problem
Every country page in the map has a Report a problem link. It opens an email with the country and the score already filled in. You can also write to shaw@worldchaosmap.app.
The most useful reports include:
- the country and the score you saw,
- what looks wrong (too high, too low, a story filed under the wrong country),
- a link to reporting that shows it.
What happens next
- A person reads every report.
- We replay the country's recent news through the scoring rules to find which rule gave the wrong result.
- The fix changes that rule for every country at once, and is tested on past data so it does not break other scores.
- The correction is logged below and in the changelog.
Scores cannot be edited by hand. If a fix is not possible yet, we say so here and explain the limit.
Corrections log
30 October 2026 · v3.3.1 · Under-reported wars scored too low
Wars that few of our outlets cover scored far too low. Replaying the news of 22 October gave Somalia 10
and DR Congo 13, because few reports of deaths reached us.
Deaths recorded by the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) now set a minimum score, the same rule for
every country. On 30 October Somalia moved to 76, DR Congo to 58 and Niger to 52. ReliefWeb humanitarian
reports are also back in the news we read.
23 October 2026 · v3.2.1 · One attack held Jordan at Severe
A single church shooting took Jordan from 3 to 93, above Ukraine. The memory of deadly violence counted one
attack as if it were a war. It now counts in full only when deaths are reported on two or more days in 30.
Replaying Jordan's news gives 40 instead of 87. Scores fall at most 12 points a day, so the change shows over several days.
23 October 2026 · v3.2.2 · People named like countries
Stories about people named Jordan or Chad (for example Jordan Bardella) were filed under the countries.
Known people and name patterns are now ignored for those countries.
23 October 2026 · v3.2.0 · Riots matched a war
On 21 October France scored 90, the same as Ukraine, because heavy riot coverage counted like deadly
violence. Days without a reported death are now capped below lethal days. France on that day becomes 78.
23 October 2026 · v3.2.0 · Stories filed under the wrong country
Accented place names (Algérie) were broken apart, so some French-language stories about Algeria,
El Salvador and Saudi Arabia were filed under France. Place names are now matched without accents and in
French, Spanish and Portuguese. A bare "Congo" now means DR Congo, as it does in most news.
23 October 2026 · v3.2.0 · Countries lifted with no news
The GDELT signal could raise a country that had no news stories at all (Djibouti 42, Timor-Leste 32).
GDELT now only adjusts a country with at least one story in the last 7 days.
23 October 2026 · v3.2.0 · Confidence too high
47 countries showed high confidence although most of their score came from filling gaps between
reports. Those scores are now at most "Partly sourced".
22 October 2026 · v3.1.2 · Dead news feeds
Only about 420 of 1,162 feeds had ever worked, and ReliefWeb and WHO alerts had stopped arriving.
Feeds were tested and repaired by hand, and every change was reviewed by a person. See Sources.
Known limits we have not fixed yet
- Wars with little English-language reporting can still score lower than they should between UCDP releases. UCDP publishes monthly, so the floor follows deaths recorded up to its latest release.
- A story carried by only one outlet is labelled "Single source". It still counts, but less.
- Scores are for whole countries. A war in one region raises the score for the whole country.
